Kathy’s Story

Kathy’s Story

I was born in the Punjab, North India, in February 1954. A few months earlier, my father had left for Wolverhampton to work as a welder. I lived with my mother, older brother, and grandparents in India for almost five years. In December 1958, we joined my father in Wolverhampton. The shift to this new life meant adjusting to the cold, learning English, and adapting to different foods as a young child.

Attending primary school introduced me to two contrasting worlds: English customs and language at school and Indian traditions at home. At home, I had responsibilities typical of a dutiful daughter, while school encouraged me to think independently and aspire to more. These conflicting expectations shaped my outlook at an early stage.

In February 1963, just a few days before reaching the age of nine, I was seriously burned in a fire accident involving a paraffin heater. I was kept in hospital for several months and had extensive plastic surgery. I had to learn to walk again. I made a full recovery but was left with much scarring. This was difficult to deal with, but my growing faith helped me find solace.
